The University of Minnesota seeks applications for three tenured or tenure-track faculty positions in the Department of Civil Engineering. We are looking for highly qualified applicants at all levels (Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor) and are particularly interested in applicants with strong core fundamentals that allow them to easily move across disciplinary boundaries and become involved in University-wide and national interdisciplinary research initiatives.

Retired Professor Walter Johnson Dies
Former University of Minnesota Civil Engineering Professor Walter K. Johnson died December 22, 2009 in Minneapolis. Johnson, a graduate of the university, was a faculty member for 19 years and advised both undergraduate and graduate students. The professor is noted for his early research on nitrogen removal by nitrification and denitrification. In 1975, Johnson became Director of Water Quality Control at the Metropolitan Waste Control Commission, where he remained employed until his retirement in 1989. The Johnson family has requested memorials be made to the Walter K. Johnson Fellowship through the University of Minnesota Foundation.

A new study compares neighborhoods' walkability (degree of ease for walking) with local levels of air pollution and finds that some neighborhoods might be good for walking, but have poor air quality. Researchers involved in the study include Department of Civil Engineering faculty member Julian Marshall and University of British Columbia faculty Michael Brauer and Lawrence Frank.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) named a U of M-led consortium and two others to share up to $24 million for fostering wind energy development in the United States. Civil engineering professor and SAFL Director Fotis Sotiropoulos is a principal investigator on the project that also includes department faculty Joe Labuz, Henryk Stolarski, Roger Arndt, and Fernando Porte-Agel. The greater research group consists of faculty from the Institute of Technology, U of M Morris, Syracuse University, and Dakota County Technical College working collaboration with a consortium of industrial partners to help reach the DOE's nationwide goal of achieving 20 percent wind power by 2030.
