Professor Joe Labuz has accepted a five-year appointment as head of the Department of Civil Engineering running from April 2013 through June 2018. Prior to his appointment, Professor Labuz had served as interim department head since July 2012.
Professor Labuz joined the faculty in 1987 and has an excellent record of teaching, research, and service to the department. As an instructor, he’s taught numerous soil and rock mechanics courses and developed new courses in experimental geomechanics and fracture of geomaterials. Labuz has also served students as the director of both undergraduate and graduate studies.
Professor Labuz is a fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers; the MSES/Miles Kersten Land Grant Chair in Civil Engineering; and has received the Distinguished Engineer Award, Minnesota Federation of Engineering, Science, and Technology Societies and the best instructor award for the Department of Civil Engineering from the IT (now CSE) Student Board.
Congratulations to Professor Labuz on his appointment as head of the Department of Civil Engineering.
The Civil Engineering Building is currently undergoing testing and repairs to fix damage caused by water intrusion on the sixth and seventh floors. A web page has been setup to provide students, staff and faculty with test results, plans and notices related to the project.
