Application Checklist

Applying to the Civil Engineering Graduate Program
To be considered for admission to the graduate program in civil engineering (CE), applicants must have earned a B.S. degree in engineering (e.g., civil, mechanical, chemical, environmental) or the sciences (e.g., chemistry, physics, mathematics) with a grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

For students from disciplines other than civil engineering, some remedial coursework may be needed. Students requiring a substantial amount of remedial coursework (e.g., more than 3 courses) may be recommended to complete a few courses prior to entry into the program, but for most students the additional coursework could be completed while a graduate student in the program. Please consult with the CE Director of Graduate Studies or a faculty member in your area of interest for a review and assessment of your academic background and coursework needs.

CE Application Instructions

1. Fill out the UMN Online Graduate School Application

2. Submit GRE & TOEFL Scores (copies are acceptable)

The institution code for the University of Minnesota Minneapolis/St. Paul campus is 6874. The GRE department code is 1102. The TOEFL score is sent directly to the Graduate School Admissions Office, but you must fill in code number 65 to indicate civil engineering as your field of interest. If you have already have your scores, send a copy of them to:

Secretary of Graduate Studies
University of Minnesota
122 Civil Engineering Bldg
500 Pillsbury Dr. SE
Minneapolis, MN 55455

The TOEFL, MELAB or IELTS is required of all international applicants whose native language is not English, except those who have completed 24 quarter credits or 16 semester credits (within the last 24 months) in residence as a full-time student at a recognized institution of higher learning in the United States before entering the University of Minnesota. The operational standard for admission to the Graduate School is a score of at least 550 on the TOEFL (or 213 on the computer-based test), 80 on the MELAB or 6.5 on the IELTS. For students taking the Internet-based TOEFL test an overall score of 79 is needed, with a minimum of 21 on the writing and 19 on the reading portions of the exam required.

3. Submit Letters of Recommendation

Letters should be requested from three persons familiar with your performance in an academic or non-academic (i.e. work) setting and who can comment on your potential for success in graduate school. Preference is for recommenders from academia. CE does not have a specific form or format for letters of recommendation, but we request that recommenders address the following points: (i) the capacity in which they know you -- as teacher, research advisor, work supervisor, etc. and for how long; (ii) your academic (or work) record and accomplishments; and (iii) their assessment of your ability to succeed in graduate-level coursework and research.

Letters should be submitted online through the Graduate School Online ApplyYourself portal. Follow the instructions for online letters. When recommenders use the online submittal process, there is a Graduate School student rating form that is optional.  It is important that each recommender submit a narrative letter, regardless of whether or not they use the optional rating form.

If you do not use the ApplyYourself online letter submission system, please provide a copy of the CE Recommendation Cover Sheet to each recommender. Recommenders should send their signed letters on letterhead stationery along with an original, signed CE Recommendation Cover Sheet, directly to the CE office (address above). The letters must be in sealed envelopes with the signature of the recommender written across the sealed flap of the envelope.

4. Supplemental Materials

CE requires that all applicants fill out the CE Supplemental Form. Upon completing the form, upload it with your Graduate School online application in the Graduate Program Supplementary Information section as a Graduate Program Additional Application document. We also ask you to upload a curriculum vitae (CV) or résumé with the additional program materials. In your CV or résumé, please list your technical publications and conference presentations.

NOTE: CE does not require document uploads for the Writing Sample, Description of Research/Work Experience or Other Information.
