Research Interests:

Design, analysis and behavior of concrete, masonry and steel-concrete composite structures. Topics of current interest include:

  • Stability of slender masonry walls with emphasis on the influence of lateral loads (e.g., wind loads, fluid pressure and seismic forces), including analytic solutions, experiments, numerical simulation and design formulas.
  • Distortional fatigue in multi-girder steel bridges, emphasizing techniques for rapid assessment and evaluation of existing bridges, including remote monitoring and numerical simulation for the development of simplified procedures.
  • Lateral stability of prestressed concrete girders, including pedestrian bridges under vehicular impact and slender spandrels in building frames under combined vertical loads and torsion.
  • Integration of large-scale experiments and numerical simulation of structural systems under three-dimensional loading.
  • Precast shear walls under seismic loading, including the behavior (strength and deformability) of the connectors between precast concrete components, and analysis and design methods for wall buildings.
  • Measurement and evaluation of earth pressure behind reinforced concrete cantilever retaining walls, including the effect of soil/wall movement and pressure intensity, as well as representative load and resistance factors for design.
  • Resistance of reinforced concrete infill panels in steel moment frames under seismic loading, emphasizing the role of the interface connectors (i.e., the shear studs) on the lateral strength, stiffness and deformation capacity of the composite system.
